Edward Lear (1812-1888) was an English musician, writer, poet and also an illustrator and painter. He was born as the last of 21 children. He had to leave his family with his eldest sister at the age of four due to financial distress. He sister took on the role of his mother until her death. Lear was also very ill from childhood: asthma, epilepsy and later blindness. From the age of 16, he was captivated by ornithology. Three years later, he published his first landscapes - Somewhere near Civitella Olavano, that not only the general public but also academics received favourably. He therefore could travel to Greece and Egypt, and later to Ceylon and India. From his journeys, he brought back a large number of colourful drawings and sketches - Coolies on the Road near Kalicut, Malabar, which he them completed in the studio. He died in San Remo of long-lasting heart problems. His funeral was very humble and none of his friends were in attendance.
