Pierre-Cécile Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1889) was a French Classist painter born to a mining engineer. He was to follow in his father’s footsteps, but fell ill and left to recuperate in Italy, where he developed his passion for art. When he was cured and returned to France, he studied art in the studio of Thomas Couture. His paintings, which often contain deep thought Patriotism or Fantasy , come across easily and simply, both in colour as well as shape and space. They correspond with the artistic direction of Symbolism. Chavannes inspired many great artists, such as Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat or Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.
