Gravensfjord

ID: #9480 | Romantism | Sea and ships

Date: 1839

The painting shows a picturesque harbour occupying most of the foreground with several wooden boats on the shore and under construction on dry land. A man stands in the foreground looking out over the water. Steep green mountains rise in the background and the sky is partially obscured by clouds. The scene has a peaceful and idyllic feel, with an emphasis on traditional boatbuilding and coexistence with nature.

Fearnley painted picture Gravensfjord in 1839. Prevailing color of this fine art print is vivid and its shape is landscape. This image is printed on demand - you can choose material, size and finishing.

Thomas Fearnley (1802-1842) was a Norwegian painter of the Romantic period and a pupil of Johan Christian Dahl. He was a very educated son of a merchant - he graduated from the Norwegian National Academy of Craft, Art Academy in Copenhagen and the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. He was married to Cecilia Andersen, daughter of the greatest banker of the time. After studying, he received a commission from Crown Prince Oscar and then other members of the royal family. Fearley travelled a lot. He visited Venice, Rome, Sicily, Switzerland, Paris and London. On these trips, he painted beautiful landscapes with wildly romantic themes ( Terrace with an Oak Tree in Sorrento), waterfalls and untamed wilderness (< a href = Fearnley-Thomas-the-grindelwaldgletscher-Ido-5978> Grinderwaldgletscher). Fearley died at 39 due to typhus. Part of his lifelong work is stored in the National Gallery in Oslo.
