Painter and son

ID: #5488 | Romantism | People

The painting depicts a picturesque harbour scene where the artist concentrates on painting the landscape. In the foreground, the painter stands with a parasol and palette in his hand. Mediterranean buildings adjacent to a rocky cliff and several boats can be seen in the background. The man in the lower right corner of the painting is wiping his face with his hand, perhaps because of the heat or the strenuous work. Overall, the work has a calm effect and evokes the atmosphere of a warm sunny day by the sea.

Thomas Fearnley (1802-1842) was a Norwegian painter of the Romantic period and a pupil of Johan Christian Dahl. He was a very educated son of a merchant - he graduated from the Norwegian National Academy of Craft, Art Academy in Copenhagen and the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. He was married to Cecilia Andersen, daughter of the greatest banker of the time. After studying, he received a commission from Crown Prince Oscar and then other members of the royal family. Fearley travelled a lot. He visited Venice, Rome, Sicily, Switzerland, Paris and London. On these trips, he painted beautiful landscapes with wildly romantic themes ( Terrace with an Oak Tree in Sorrento), waterfalls and untamed wilderness (< a href = Fearnley-Thomas-the-grindelwaldgletscher-Ido-5978> Grinderwaldgletscher). Fearley died at 39 due to typhus. Part of his lifelong work is stored in the National Gallery in Oslo.
