Gogh painted a whole series of paintings of sunflowers. The first series in 1887, in which he captured laid flowers of sunflowers (see an example of such a Sunflower ). In the second series from 1888 from Arles, he already painted Sunflowers in a vase. This series was associated with Paul Gauguin as they were part of the decoration of his inn room in Arles. The first two variants of the image were dark, and only the third and fourth received the typical yellow color (one with a blue-green and the other with a yellow background). To make matters worse, in 1889, Gogh painted other versions, or rather copies of Sunflowers from the second series. For Gogh, the yellow color of sunflowers represented happiness and optimism, and he considered painting them a great challenge (Not everyone can find the heat to melt this gold and the tones of these flowers.
