They have found traces of the original painting in which the Mona Lisa has a thin scarf over her face, worn by Florentine women during childbirth. However, it is still not known whether the portrait of the woman in the painting belongs to the wife of the Florentine banker del Gioconda or to a courtesan. In fact, the first written records of who is in the painting do not appear until 50 years after it was made. The painting, completed in 1506, can now be found in the Louvre in Paris.
