Under trees

ID: #3769 | Postimpressionism | Architecture

The painting depicts an expressionist painting of an urban scene. It is dominated by vivid brushes of colour that create the image of trees whose leaves play with different shades of green and yellow. In the background are hinted buildings, with hints of windows and doors, bathed in shadows and light. A modest figure of a pedestrian can be seen in the foreground, but the details are not clearly discernible. Overall, the painting demonstrates dynamism and energy through strong brushstrokes and contrasting colours.

Scottish Post-Impressionist painter Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935). Because he was born into a family of bankers, he was able to study at the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy and then at the Académie Julian in Paris. During the first 10 years of the 20th century, he lived in Paris, where he deepened his artistic skill at painting still lifes. As he himself said, his largest painting inspirations were Vincent Van Gogh and Rembrandt. He died in Edinburgh.
