The original name was painting crew of Captain Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburcha preparing to march. Today expanded title Night Watch got the picture, because dark paint, which was provided in the 18th century. The paint in the first half of the 20th century removed.
What attracts the viewer's eye first, the play of light and shadow, Rembrandt captured that perfectly. In the foreground in the picture below we can see the black-clad captain as talks with his officer. For bearer John Visscher Cornelissen with a garrison flag is a little girl in a dress whose color points to win. A dead chicken in his belt again symbolizes the defeated opponent.
The painting was originally two other characters, balustrade and the edge of the step, which served to capture movement. However, these were trimmed during installation of the Amsterdam City Hall. The entire original scene captures copy painter Gerrit Lundens, located National Gallery in London.
