Whistler's Mother is an image expressing the beauty of motherhood, respect for parents, family values and is the essence of Protestant values such as humility, hard work, self-control and asceticism. James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834 – 1903) painted this picture in 1871 in London. He painted the picture for many weeks and put a lot of effort into it. For its time, it was an almost experimental painting using square and round shapes and harmonious colors. The delicacy of the hands and face contrasts with the coarser painting of the dress or curtain. On the wall hangs Whistler's painting of the London Docks (titled Black Lion Wharf).

Because of its experimental form, it was not immediately positively received. However, after a while the painting became famous and in 1934 it even made it onto American postage stamps (with the accompanying text In Memory and In Honor of the Mothers of America). As with some other works (such as Munch's The Scream), this painting radiates something at first glance. Something that the image communicates directly and to everyone. Whistler's Mother is the American painter's most infamous painting and is also sometimes called the Victorian Mona Lisa. It became part of several works of art.
