"American Gothic" by Grant Wood , painted in 1930, is an iconic example of 20th century American art. The painting depicts a rural couple standing in front of their wooden house. The centerpiece of the composition is a farmer with a pitchfork in his hand, who is dressed in traditional country clothes. His face looks serious and stoic. Beside him stands a woman, probably his wife, holding a basket of flowers. Both figures are depicted in a static position, which adds to the impression of a serious and stable life.

The house in the painting has a Gothic architectural style, with windows in the shape of a Gothic arch. This detail adds symbolism to the image and adds historical context to it. The composition of the painting captures the simplicity of rural life, but also raises questions about the values and morals associated with a rural environment. Wood created a painting that is often seen as a critique of conservative values as well as a portrait of rural America during the Great Depression.

With his combination of realistic style and timeless themes, Wood created one of the most famous works of American art that still attracts attention and interpretation today.
