French academic painter. In his choice of topics, he was a traditionalist: he painted mythological scenes and modern interpretations of Classicist
themes (with an emphasis on painting the female body). Bouguereau admired Raphael
, and even gave him one of his paintings. In his time, he was considered one of the finest painters, even abroad. At the end of his career, his paintings began to seem too traditionalist, with techniques embedded in the past. In some encyclopaedias, his name even ceased to appear. To date, however, we can consider some of his works beautiful and inspiring.
