Ferneley, JohnAn English Classicist painter. John Ferneley (1782-1860), similarly to Philips Wouwerman, focused on hunting scenes and races. Like his father, he was to become a wheelwright. But he decided otherwise and left to study in London, where he became a sports artist. At 25, he began to travel around Ireland, but soon returned to England. He began to paint scenes of fox hunting, which was very popular in England. His paintings Edward Horner Reynard and his brother George Grouse hunting in Yorkshire soon gained the admiration of many celebrities. Count Orsay himself offered him patronage. For his paintings of horses, he is considered one of the greatest British artists focusing on this theme.
