Havickszoon Jan Steen (1626-1679). Dutch genre painter of the 17th century. His paintings are renowned for his insight into the psychology of the characters, his sense of humour, and his pregnant expression of the essence of the message. He painted distinctively, using bright colours. In particular, he created genre pictures from the lives of simple people, but did not avoid religious, mythological motifs, portraits, landscapes, etc.
