Edward Lear (1812-1888) was an English musician, writer, poet and also an illustrator and painter. He was born as the last of 21 children. He had to leave his family with his eldest sister at the age of four due to financial distress. He sister took on the role of his mother until her death. Lear was also very ill from childhood: asthma, epilepsy and later blindness. From the age of 16, he was captivated by ornithology. Three years later, he published his first landscapes -
