Girl with a Pearl Earring is probably the most famous Vermeer
painting. The composition of the picture is very modest - it consist only of black background portrait without any supplements or figures. Colors are strong and vibrant. Surprising (though not in the context of other Vermeer
works, as this detail can be found on his other paintings) is a Turkish turban, which the girl wears. An important detail is, of course, pearl earrings. Jewelry belonged to the court etiquette and women were portrayed with them very often. In the former Netherlands pearls belonged to the very important status symbols. To this day it remains a mystery who was a model for him, it may have been his 13-year-old daughter Mary.

Dutch painter. He enjoyed painting scenes from life and common situations in the households of townspeople. During his lifetime, he did not become famous and in his time, he was rather a provincial painter. He worked carefully and slowly; he loved to work with light and used brilliant colours with expensive pigments. His art was rediscovered in the 19th century and he has since slowly become a recognized and sought-after painter. He allegedly worked with the obscura camera to achieve true perspective and composition. Often his paintings depict one or two figures at the window. His most famous work is considered to be Girl with a Pearl Earring.
